When I was asked a few years ago what my 50 year plan was for wildlife, I mentioned I would love to have a vet hospital dedicated purely to wildlife, never thinking I would be able to make it happen. I probably would not have if Lynleigh, fellow Sydney Wildlife member had not come along on this crazy ride with me. We decided that because Sydney Wildlife Rescue did not own land we should have something movable, so we decided to have a mobile unit.

So – how the heck were we going to make this concept a reality? And more importantly – how the heck were we going to fund it…?
With the help of many Sydney Wildlife Rescue members we organized three very successful major fundraisers, and also received many individual donations. After three years of hard work we had raised enough money to buy a motor home and start to fit it out as a Veterinary care unit. Thanks to our supporters' generosity we could even purchase some state of the art diagnostic equipment.

On the 11th January 2020 we set off on our maiden voyage to the South coast - one of the worst hit fire areas. The ‘launch’ was not the celebratory party we’d envisaged but as we drove down the main road of Terrey Hills at 6am - with a convoy of six other cars carrying volunteer vets and nurses - we were treated to a wonderful surprise send-off! Two of our Sydney Wildlife members were on horseback, along with four Rural Fire Fighter volunteers to lead us through the shopping precinct. Many of the locals lined the streets to wave and cheer us off. Someone deposited a tray of home-baked goods through the window for us to eat on our long journey and others thrust cash donations into our hands. We drove through ribbons and streamers held by our own proud Sydney Wildlife members. I don’t think there was a dry eye in that van – it was such a moving send-off. Someone on face book said it was the first time they had ever seen a traffic jam in urban Terrey Hills at 6.30am, but they did not mind waiting.
We don't have a vet hospital as such but a fantastic vet advice and treatment facility which now does regular clinic days and our wonderful team of vets and members who run the Care Unit each week work very hard to ensure the days run smoothly.
Our volunteer veterinarian team will treat any native animal from any registered wildlife group (some patients have made a three hour drive to see us!) We feel the health of the animal is more important than the group it's carer belongs to.
We use an appointment booking service to get the patients’ information beforehand and enter it into our computer records system before they arrive. The information is then sent out to the vets the day before so they can read the history of the animal and inform us of any requirements they may have for that patient or if they require extra time for x-rays etc.
We can see up to 10 patients a day and then we perform necropsies (if any) at the end of the day as we feel it is very important to work out why an animal has succumbed to its injuries or disease.
We also have help from our local zoo and the Australian Registry of Wildlife Health allowing us to send samples for histopathology.
It is amazing to have such a wide reaching great team of professionals who are willing to volunteer their time to assist Australian wildlife.

All wildlife patients MUST be accompanied by a registered wildlife carer. Carers will be seen by appointment only and are asked to bring their current wildlife group membership card and their patient’s current record number.
